Revalidation / Continued Professional Development
British Judo puts learning at the heart of its coach education programme and has put in place a system that encourages coaches to grow and develop their knowledge and skills.
In January 2013 a new system linked to continuous personal development opportunities for all levels of coach was launched, giving coaches more autonomy over their earning and development.
Coaches can now choose from a range of modules/subjects to plan and manage their relevant learning opportunities over an extended period.
Revalidation for Level 1 Licensed Coaches
The revalidation period for BJA Level 1 coaches is three years. During the revalidation period participation in three different types of revalidation event or 1 National Technical Conference is required for licencing and insurance purposes.
Revalidation for Level 2 Licensed Coaches
The revalidation period for 1st 4 Sport Level 2 coaches is three years. During the revalidation period participation in three different types of revalidation event or 1 National Technical Conference is required for licencing and insurance purposes.
Revalidation for Level 3 Licensed Coaches
The revalidation period for 1st 4 Sport Level 3 coaches is six years. During the revalidation period participation in three different types of revalidation event or 1 National Technical Conference is required for licencing and insurance purposes.
Revalidation Modules
Before participating in any coaching event, it is advisable to check that the intended course or activity is approved for revalidation purposes prior to commencing the activity.

From time to time additional modules or events will be added. All qualifying modules will carry an identifying strap line:
Suitable for revalidation purposes of all levels of British Judo Coach Awards (this may be Level specific)
Supporting documents
To remain licensed to coach and be covered by insurance, all British Judo Coaches, regardless of the duration of the revalidation period for their license, must:
- Renew their British Judo Association Membership annually
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check (formerly CRB) every three years
- Complete a Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport course every three years (on-line training available every alternate three year period otherwise it must be face to face or interactive online classroom course (L2). As good practice, we would prefer Coaches to attend a FtF class where possible, but will accept an interactive online classroom course if this isn’t possible.
- Renew their First Aid Certificate every three years (on-line training available every alternate three year period otherwise it must be face to face)
- Satisfy the British Judo revalidation event requirements detailed above.
Should any of the above not be in place, the individual’s licence to coach is suspended and insurance cover through British Judo withdrawn.
*A qualified coach can obtain their own insurance if they wish, but they will not be covered by British Judo as part of the licensing scheme and the benefits it includes.
