77 Judoka Crowned British Schools Champions This Weekend
This weekend saw over 650 pupils compete to be crowned British Schools Champion for 2020 at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport and a new name engraved on the Simon Hicks trophy.
Saturday saw school years 8 & 9 and 10 & 11 in action, while Sunday saw school years 6 & 7, 12 & 13 and adaptive and visually impaired judoka compete.
In addition to pupils battling it out for gold, they were also competing for their schools. In the absence of defending champions Harrow School, it was a closely contested competition with just two points separating the top 3 schools.
After the first day of competition it was Tavistock College who claimed the top spot leading overnight heading into the final day of action with 15 points after strong performances which saw them win a gold, silver and bronze medals from Alanna Hopkins (G8/9 +63kg), Charlotte Hay (G8/9 -57kg) and Reuben Frise (B8/9 -73kg) respectively.
However, a strong second day from Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic, saw Sophie Kenny (F3) and Joshua Warburton (M7) both win gold and Felicity Warburton (F1) claim bronze, saw them overhaul Tavistock to claim the top spot and the Simon Hicks trophy by a single point with Darrick Wood School finishing 3rd.
Ron Cleere was awared the Malcolm Collins award for outstanding services to Adaptive Judo.
There were also awards for Leah McLaughlin who was voted young technical official (pictured left) and Asia Abatiello who was voted young referee of the weekend (right).
