University Judoka from across the country shined at the BUCS Judo competition at the British Universities Colleges and Sports (BUCS) Championships in Sheffield between Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 February.

Team Bath dominated Saturday’s proceedings in the judo at All Saints Sports Centre during the BUCS Championships, in the 1st Kyu and above (Dan Grade) competition, collecting a total of seven medals, including four gold.

Adam Conroy and Conor Murphy both successfully defended their titles in the under-60kg and under-100kg categories respectively while Jan Gosiewski (-73kg) and Chloe Robyns-Landicombe (-57kg) also climbed top spot on the medal rostrum.

It was a successful day for Anglia Ruskin too with Mateja Glusac and Matthew Kavanagh both taking gold in the under-90kg and under-81kg competitions.

And University of Wolverhampton’s Jodie Myers retained her BUCS Over-78kg judo title with victory over Alison Wilson of Aberdeen. Nora Beeking of Glasgow and Emily Snell of Birmingham took the bronzes in the same category.

“It’s about representing your university and giving back what they have given to me in terms of support, mentoring and of course my scholarship, I’m happy to win,” said Commonwealth Games silver medallist Myers.

Fellow Team GB team mate and University of Wolverhampton team mate Ebony Drysdale-Daley also took gold in the -70kg category. Sarah Hill of Edinburgh took -70kg silver, Sophie Daniels of Nottingham and Shermane Henlon of London took bronzes.

Oxford University did amazingly well too with seven players fighting and between them taking over 20 ippons and five medals between them.

Oxford University judoka Peter Miles took the -66kg gold, Renz Vallejera of Bath took silver while Tom Johnson of London School of Economics and Andre Rosa of Anglia Ruskin took bronzes.

Pete said: “I was very pleased to win BUCS today competing in the weight category above what I usually compete in. The atmosphere in the arena was great all day, and I’m happy to win a gold medal for Oxford.”

Meanwhile, fellow Oxford University team-mates Rachel Wheatley gained -57kg bronze and Alwyn Clarke took -73kg bronze.
