Tough day one in Budapest
Eight British fighters of the crew were on stage on the first day of the Budapest Grand Prix where the team left with mixed feelings. Lewis Keeble was the one to get the closest to it.
In the u60kg category, Ashley McKenzie started off with a lead against Nuno Carvalho (POR), where a minor error towards the end of the contest cost McKenzie to miss out on the second round. Nathon Burns also started off with great domination in the u66kg category against Erchaogetu (CHN), however the Chinese overcome Burns by a yuko score towards the end. In the same weight class, Leewis Keeble strived through Loforte (MOZ) and Lefevere (BEL) before loosing out against later on gold medalist Smagulov (KAZ). Due to the high amount of entries despite the fact that Keeble went into the third round, it was not enough to book a spot in the repechage system.
In the u73kg category two Britons were in the game, Ian Gosiewski and Danny Williams. Both started off with a win before facing the final pair up of the weight class. Williams narrowly lost out against later on silver medalist Draksic, whilst Ungvari stopped Gosiewski before heading onto the top of the podium.
A tough draw resulted the women team to have an early exit, however tomorrow that all can be changed as we have another great set of players on show. Five male and three female competitors can be followed on the second day of the event, including double Pan-American gold medalist (2015), Owen Livesey (u81kg), London 2012 silver medalist Gemma Gibbons (u78kg) and Masters silver medalist (2015) Natalie Powell (u78kg).
The tournament will begin at 10:00am local time!
