Third round exit for Smythe-Davis

Day three of the International Judo Federation World Championships in Doha, Qatar, saw two GB judoka in action as Nekoda Smythe-Davis (Ealing Judo Club; Jo Crowley) and Lele Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas)were in action in the -57kg category.

Smythe-Davis was first up for GB Judo as she faced Daria Kurbonmamadova (AIN) in the opening round. 2019 European Champion, Kurbonmamadova picked up a shido early in the contest before producing a throw for waza-ari score. Smythe-Davis evened the score with a waza-ari score of her own before both judoka were awarded a shido a piece.

With the score level, the contest entered Golden Score where Smythe-Davis registered a further waza-ari score to progress directly to Round Three as her second-round opponent, Saha Al Badi (QAT) withdrew before the competition.

In Round Three Smythe-Davis faced 2019 World Champion and Current Masters Champion Christa Deguchi (CAN).

Deguchi picked up a shido as the contest neared the midway point before being awarded a second in the final twenty seconds. With the contest seemingly heading for Golden Score Deguchi produced an osoto-gari throw for ippon score with just 2-seconds of the contest remaining to progress to the Quarter-Finals.

Nairne, meanwhile, faced fast emerging youngster Thauany-David Capanni-Dias (ITA) in the opening round.

Nairne survived a strong start by the 2023 Portugal Grand Prix bronze medallist who was later awarded a shido. Nairne was then awarded two shidos in quick succession before Capanni-Dias had a score waived off.

With no score on the board, the contest entered Golden Score where Capanni-Dias picked up a second shido.

Nairne survived a further strangle attempt by Capanni-Dias in the 10th minute of the contest before being awarded a third, contest ending shido, resulting in defeat and seeing Capanni-Dias progress.

Tomorrow will see three GB judoka in action as world number 1 Lucy Renshall (SKK; Pete Blood) is joined by European Champion Gemma Howell (Wolverhampton JC; Bill Kelly) in the -63kg category.

Meanwhile in the -81kg category, Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) will be in action.
