TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: 10 GB JUDOKA SET FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN

British Judo has today announced the final team that will compete at the Judo World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from 6th – 12th October 2022.

Sam Hall who recently won silver at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will be competing in the men’s -60kg category. Hall also won his first Grand Slam gold medal at last year’s Zagreb Grand Prix, followed by a bronze medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.

Lachlan Moorhead will be looking for another senior medal after picking up his first senior medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam last year. After being crowned Commonwealth champion at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Moorhead will be even more focused to perform.

Chelsie Giles who claimed gold at the European Judo Championships Seniors Sofia will be another one to watch after picking up four Grand Slam medals in 2021 including gold at the Tel Aviv Grand Slam.

Tashkent will be Acelya Toprak‘s first senior World Championships appearance. After narrowly missing out on the gold and claiming the -57kg silver medal at Birmingham 2022, Toprak will be fighting for another podium position.

Current world number one, Lucy Renshall had a solid start to the year after winning gold at the Antalya Grand Slam. Since then, Renshall has been recovering from a shoulder operation but is expected to have a strong return to the mat in the women’s -63kg category.

Also competing in the women’s -63kg is Gemma Howell who claimed gold at the European Judo Championships in Sofia earlier this year. Howell narrowly missed out on her first Commonwealth gold at Birmingham 2022, but will still be a strong contender for a podium position in Tashkent.

Another weight category duo competing is Kelly Petersen-Pollard and Jemima Yeats-Brown. It will be a World senior debut for Petersen-Pollard, but Tashkent will be Yeats-Brown’s second senior World Championships. Both -70kg judoka won bronze at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and will be looking to add to their medal tallies in Uzbekistan.

In the women’s -78kg category, Emma Reid and Natalie Powell will represent GB judo. After facing each other in the -78kg final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham the two judoka will be looking to bring home a World Championship medal.

Reid will be making her World Championships debut whilst Powell will return to the World Championships after last competing in the senior competition in 2019 at the Toyko World Championships.
