This year Stevenage Judo Club in Hertfordshire will be commemorating 50 years since it first opened by hosting a special anniversary party. 

The club opened its doors at Broadhall Community Centre in 1965 and has been giving opportunities for the local community to try and progress in the sport ever since.   

It’s founder Bill ‘Mr Judo’ Stroud, now 79 years old, still plays and important role at the club acting as its President as well as mentor to its players. 

The club expanded quickly and had to relocate after just four years at Broadhall, moving to Barnwell School. In 1980 the club moved again this time to nearby Campsill School before finally settling at its current home at Marriotts Sports Centre in 2012. 

Stevenage Judo Club has a rich history in the sport having produced medallists at variety of levels from county up to Olympic. The club has been recognised for it’s contribution to the community down the years including the Sport for All Award in 1979. 

The club are also heavily involved in raising money for charity. Since 2013 they have raised over £9000 for charities. 

“We’re delighted to be hosting a 50^th Anniversary event this autumn”, said club chairman Andrew Murray. 

“Stevenage Judo Club has such a rich history and everyone connected with the club is looking forward to honouring and celebrating the club’s achievements”.
