Statement: European Judo Championships

Following the recent Stage One selections for the European Judo Championships, an appeal was lodged in accordance with the British Judo Selection, Nomination and Deselection “Fast” Appeals Procedure.

The appeal was made in relation to the -57kg category where Lele Nairne and Acelya Toprak were selected.

The British Judo Fast Appeals Panel met on 31st August and concluded that the Selection Panel had not strictly followed the applicable selection process as outlined in the British Judo 2023 Senior European Championships Selection Procedure.

The Panel considers that the Selection Panel amendments, as set out in the updated Selection Criteria published on 31st May, was not a valid amendment to the selection procedure.

Therefore, the decision has been taken that no -57kg fighter be selected for the championships until the 1st January 2023 – 22nd October 2023 Performance Timeline is complete and all IJF ranking points are included for consideration as per the published 2023 Senior European Selection Procedure.

The European Championship team will be finalised during Stage Two selections on week commencing 23rd October.
