An awards ceremony was held at Police Headquarters in Welwyn Garden City on the evening of Thursday, March 1 to recognise long service, outstanding community work and bravery.

“Events such as these are an incredibly important and valuable way of recognising the commitment, dedication and special contribution of people who help to keep Hertfordshire safe” said David Lloyd, Chairman of the Police Authority, who was Guest of Honour.

38-year-old Detective Sergeant Laurie Rush, who is based in Hemel Hempstead and his brother and sister, 33-year-old Matthew Rush and 31-year-old Joanna Rush, were honoured for their work in setting up and running Rush Judo in Northchurch. Laurie received a Chief Constable’s commendation and Matthew and Joanna received Hertfordshire Constabulary awards.

The three established the community based club in November 2009 to honour their late father. In the first year they found additional funding, obtain formal qualifications, found premises, purchased equipment and recruited hard to reach groups like the award winning Mencap Class. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength. They also ensure all the proceeds go straight back into the club to ensure its survival and continued success in the future.

The club has gone from strength to strength and now have over 55 licensed participants and the club is continuing to grow. Their work with young people with special needs has seen the club pick up various awards including winning the BJAs ‘Make a Difference’ award and the Herts Sport’s Contribution to Disabled Sport award.

This latest award has continued to recognise the excellent work Laurie, Matthew and Joanna are doing, along with the rest of the team at Rush Judo Club.
