Peter Blewett retires from British Judo Board
After serving a term of 10 years on the British Judo Board, Friday saw Peter Blewett retire from his position as Vice Chair.
Blewett joined the British Judo Board in 2012 before being elected as Chairman of Judo England in 2017 and Board Vice Chairman, both positions he held until his retirement.
On Friday 11 November, British Judo hosted a retirement dinner for Blewett, allowing him to go out on a high with the success of a home Commonwealth Games. The dinner was attended by Board members, British Judo President Rowena Birch, Chief Executive Andrew Scoular and other members of staff that have worked closely with Blewett over the years.
Blewett is a 7th Dan, Senior Examiner, Senior Club Coach and is Chairman of the London Area and The Budokwai in Chelsea. He won the British National Championships in 1979 and competed for Great Britain in the European Team Championships in 1980 and World Student Games in Rio de Janeiro in 1978 where he returned as Head of the Judo delegation at the Paralympics in 2016.
Blewett said: “I am delighted and honoured to receive the Kano Trophy presented by Ronnie Saez, British Judo Association Chair on behalf of the International Judo Federation for service to judo after serving on the Board of Directors for ten years, seven of which as Vice Chair. Thank you to all the Directors and members who I have been privileged to serve and work alongside.”
British Judo Chairman, Ronnie Saez said: “Peter has been a tremendously hard working and talented member of our board for the last 10 years. I have enjoyed working with him immensely and he has provided me with valuable guidance and support in his role as BJA Vice Chair, Safeguarding and Anti-Doping Lead. I shall miss his presence at our meetings and also his keen sense of humour which often lightened the mood during our gatherings.”
British Judo CEO Andrew Scoular added: “It has been a pleasure to work alongside Peter for the past 10 years. He has been a fabulous support on the Performance Advisory Group, as Board lead on Safeguarding and Anti-Doping. Peter’s vast expertise has been an immense help over the years with the challenges we have faced. He will also be a hard act to follow in the role of England Area Chair!”
