Obituary: Harry Hobbs
It is with the greatest regret that British Judo reports the very sad loss of Harry Hobbs of Dudley Judo Club and his subsequent funeral which took place at Gornal Wood Crematorium on 18th July in front of an audience greater than the seating capacity of the venue, Harry was adored so much by so many, he was 88 years old.
Harry of Dudley Judo Club was famous for his outstanding seio-nage, it was one to wish for being incredibly powerful; and technically accurate, he floored some of the best judoka in the land with it on his way to multiple trophies.
Harry was a very modest man who just got on with several sports, but he excelled in judo. After his competitive career was over, he spent many years coaching at the Dudley club and also for the Midland area with great success especially in the area team competitions.
Keith Merrick who trained under Harrys expert eye for around 15 years and was tutored from 4th kyu to 4th Dan by Harry said “Harry was not only a great player and coach he was a great human being who always tried his best to help others reach their dreams”. Harry did this without fuss and not expecting anything in return, he just got pleasure out of helping others.
Harry will be sadly missed by the Midlands judo community; British Judo sends our deepest condolences to Harry’s wife Mary and the rest of the family.
