Norwegian judo team visit Anglia Ruskin University
Many thanks to Anglia Ruskin for providing the below release
Members of the Norwegian national judo team joined their new national head coach Mike Newton, on a visit to Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) over two days before they moved to Centre of Excellence in Walsall to attend GB squad training.
The athletes from Norway were all international junior athletes and attended Anglia Ruskin for two days to train with the Anglia Ruskin team and receive some sports science support.
Head Coach for Norway, Newton said “We are very grateful to ARU and the judo team for the warm welcome, training sessions and physiological tests performed. The results of the tests will be very useful in helping athletes improve their strength and conditioning programmes and inform their individual approach to weight management.”
Bob Challis who runs the England Performance Pathway centre based at Anglia Ruskin said “I think it is great that we now have a reputation that means teams would like to come to us and visit, it is good for our athletes to get exposure to international players, but also it meant some of our sports science students could gain employability skills and we had assistance in one of our lectures from an Olympic bronze medallist. This type of collaboration of information is very important on sport.”
Olympic Bronze Medallist, Neil Eckersley, who coaches in Norway and travelled with the Norwegian team said “It was very informative to see the training approaches used at ARU, some of which I shall be implementing in the WANG environment where I coach. It was also a pleasure to participate in a Q&A session with ARU students on the subject of using and providing feedback.”
Next month the British Army judo team should be visiting Anglia Ruskin for a similar period in the final preparation for the Inter-Services Championships where they will compete against the RAF and Royal Navy.
