Natalie Powell takes Silver to make it 4 medals for GBR at the Samsun Grand Prix

Welsh judoka, Natalie Powell, claimed silver medal at the Samsun Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Cardiff University student topped off a successful weekend for British Judo adding a silver medal to the bronze medals of Nekoda Davis (-57kg), Sally Conway (-70kg) and Alice Schlesinger (-63kg).

Nekoda Davis took bronze in the -57kg category following a bronze medal fight of highs and lows against Tina Zeltner of Austria. Sally Conway (-70kg) won her first medal of the year defeating Belgium’s Roxane Taeymans and Alice Schlesinger (-63kg) continued her winning streak collecting a bronze medal to add to her 2015 medal collection.

Commenting on the women’s performances, Lead Women’s Coach, Kate Howey said: “It was a very successful Grand Prix for the women with some great performances from both the older players and the younger ones coming through.

“Medals at this level are important, every medal means points towards Rio 2016 Olympic qualification.”

Kelly Edwards and Gemma Howell also came away with 5th places in the -52kg and -63kg categories respectively.

Junior European Cup, Lignano

The junior British athletes, not to be outdone by their senior counterparts, came back from Italy with a total of 8 medals.

Jemima Yeats-Brown secured the only British gold of the weekend defeating Gimena Laffeuillade of Argentina in the -63kg category. In the same category, Lucy Renshall took a bronze.

Bekky Livesey (-57kg) and Stuart McWatt (-81kg) both made the finals of their categories and collected the silver medals.

Cleaning up in the repechage, claiming bronze medals, were Lele Nairne (-52kg), Jodie Caller (-57kg), Neil MacDonald (-60kg) and Eric Ham (-66kg). Sam Hall (-60kg) and Daniel Powell (-66kg) also placed 7th in their categories.
