Men’s and women’s teams selected for World Team Championships

British Judo will field a men’s and women’s team at the 2012 World Team Championships in Salvador, Brazil on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October.

The two-day event will act as a test event ahead of the individual 2013 World Championships which will take place in the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city of Rio de Janeiro.

16 men’s and women’s teams will compete as the International Judo Federation looks to showcase the year’s only world championships for top ranked judoka with the aim of including a team competition at the next Olympic Games.

The five-strong women’s team features Louise Renicks, Connie Ramsey, Faith Pitman, Megan Fletcher and Caroline Kinnane.

British Championships silver medallist Louise Renicks competes in the -52kg category while British Championships gold medallist Connie Ramsey fights at -57kg.

Rome World Cup bronze medallist Faith Pitman takes to the mat at -63kg with Rome World Cup silver medallist Megan Fletcher competing in the -70kg category.

Commonwealth champion Caroline Kinnane will be the team’s heavyweight as she competes in the +70kg category.

Caroline Kinnane said: “I am extremely excited and honoured to have been selected for World Teams. It’s going to be an amazing experience.

“My main aim for the competition is to test myself and perform to the best of my ability as it will be my first experience on a world stage. Most of all I aim to enjoy myself and gain all I can from the opportunity.”

The five-strong men’s team consists of Nathon Burns, Danny Williams, Tom Reed, Andy Burns and Chris Sherrington.

British Championships silver medallist Nathon Burns fights at -66kg while London 2012 Olympian Danny Williams fights in the -73kg category.

British Open silver medallist Tom Reed competes at -81kg with British Championships bronze medallist Andy Burns taking to the mat at -90kg.

London 2012 Olympian Chris Sherrington will be the team’s heavyweight as he sees action at +90kg.

Nathon Burns said: “This will be my first ever World Championships of any kind and I’m really excited to be there with the hope of returning at Rio 2016.

“I want to compete in the highest level competitions and this will be a really good experience for me fighting against world class judoka at a packed out venue.”
