Matside Coaching and Matside Coach Award

Matside coaching is one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching; it is also probably one of the most difficult to do well. Some coaches seem to have the personality which lends itself to this role; they seem to get the best performances out of the player very often getting them to raise their game at the crucial time.

Maybe you are not a natural motivator. However, whether you have a natural talent for Matside coaching or not, there is much that you can do to improve your knowledge and skills. Of course, the role that the Matside coach will play largely depends on the standard of the players and the level of the competition.

The role of the coach working with junior players in their first competition will differ vastly from the coach working with top performers competing in international events. All coaches wishing to coach matside must hold a BJA Matside Coach Award.

MATSIDE COACH AWARD

British Judo’s Matside Coach Award provides the coach with the skills and knowledge which will allow them to improve their Matside coaching and deliver quality service and duty of care to the players they are coaching. Professionalising this important role is the principal aim, ensuring that the coach and player’s behaviour is consistent with the values of the sport and there is strict adherence to the British Judo Association’s Code of Conduct and Ethics.

Through the certification process, we aim to encourage the highest standards of coach behaviours while they are engaged in the ‘Matside’ coaching process.

To reduce the inconvenience caused by travel, time and expenses incurred by the learners in attending a face-to-face Matside Coach Award course, British Judo is now offering the Matside Coach Award as an online course. We will discontinue face-to-face courses in the future.
