Kingsley School Judo Club lit up Devon County Championships with an incredible 22-medal haul on Sunday 12 February at Kingsbridge.
The club fielded an enthusiastic 13-strong team with many judoka competing for the first time.
In the team event Kingsley took bronze after defeating Ronin Do Judo Kai by six wins to three.
The club’s highly-talented youngsters produce some excellent judo in the individual competition to claim seven County Championship titles.

In the under 12 age class Joe Hillyer (-34kg), Finlay Mathers (–38kg) and Louis Hughes (-46kg) all won their respective weight categories with Finlay repeating his 2011 victory.

In the under 16 age class Denver Butterworth (-38kg) performed possibly the best counter throw of the day against South Brent’s Adam Whitfield to take further gold for Kingsley while Jacob Ward marked his return after a two year lay-off by winning bronze in the same weight category.

In the same age group Joseph Wickett (+100kg) and Michael Edwards (-66kg) sealed two more gold medals with the latter winning all six contests by ippon.

A much improved Oliver Mather (-60kg) won three bouts by ippon to win his first county title while Elliot Sutcliffe, (-55kg) who was fighting in his first ever competition, took silver. Chris Edwards (-50kg) took a bronze medal as Kingsley dominated proceedings.

Bronze medals were also won in the under 12 age class by newcomers Felicity Barkley (-26kg), Louie Mathers (-27kg) and Oliver Stacey (-30kg).

Kingsley Coach Simon Ward said: “I’m extremely proud of all the team’s efforts. They shwocased great attacking judo skills; we had some very encouraging performances from our newer fighters and confident mature technical performances from our older squad fighters.”
