British judoka will have the chance to make their name, and book a spot on the Great Britain squad this weekend at the 2016 Junior and Senior British Championships in Sheffield on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 December.

The English Institute of Sport will once again play host to the British Championships and the crowd will be hoping the judo matches the excitement of last week’s Pre-Cadet and Cadet Championships.

In the Juniors on Saturday, a number of weights stand out with the -57kg and -60kg, in particular, sure to provide a lot of high quality action. Acelya Toprak claimed silver at -57kg last year and she will be aiming to end the year on a high, which has seen her come fifth at the Junior European Championships in Malaga. The likes of Natasha Fraser, Josie Steele, Stephanie Walker and Darcie Hancocks will be among the group hoping to put her off her game though.

-60kg is always guaranteed to bring plenty of quality and with defending champion Peter Miles out due to injury there’s a chance for any number of judoka to claim top spot. Scott Thomson, Henry Wakes, Showgo Kimura, Ryan Burt and Oliver Park will all be in the running.

In the Seniors a day later, three of our Rio Olympians will be taking to the mat in their first competition since the Olympics this summer. Natalie Powell returns at -78kg while Ben Fletcher could have an interesting match-up against defending -100kg champion Philip Awiti-Alcaraz.

Meanwhile Colin Oates has opted to move up not just one, but two weight categories, as he goes from -66kg to -81kg. Owen Livesey will be looking to add another British title to his collection and his contest with Oates could be a contrast in styles.

Away from those weights, the Senior -70kgs will be a chance for the up and coming fighters in that weight to make their mark with Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway watching on. Jemima Yeats-Brown and Ebony Drysdale-Daley are the two standout names with Yeats-Brown in particular having enjoyed the move up from -63kg over the last year.

However there are a number of younger judoka who will push them hard with Cadet European bronze medallist Chloe Nunn, 2015 Junior champion Kelly Petersen and Shelley Ludford all well placed to join them on the podium.

In the Men’s competition -73kg is always worth a watch with a good mix of older senior athletes and up and coming judoka entered. Patrick Dawson will be back at defend his title from 2015 but former champions Jan Gosiewski and Danny Williams will both be keen to push him for gold while the likes of Eric Ham and Connor Ireland will also be there or thereabouts.

You can follow all the action on our live blog from 09:00am UK time on both days and follow British Judo on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter throughout the weekend for exclusive content.
