This Saturday, the British National Team Championships will return to the home of British Judo, as the University of Wolverhampton plays host to teams from across the United Kingdom.

Arguably one of the most exciting events on the domestic schedule, the National Teams is a rare opportunity for judoka to unite and compete for their respective areas

Senior

In 2022 the London area were the most successful taking three gold medals including both the male and female senior titles.

This year London will be represented by Luke Davies (Ealing Judo Club) and returning 2022 team members, Reuel O’Neil, Sami Awiti (Enfield) and Adam Adaman in the senior men’s category.

In the womens category, London have five of the victorious 2022 team back to defend their title. Maddy Birri (Ealing Judo Club), Hannah Niven, Beth O’Connor, Maddie Rymer and Fayokemi Abidekun will be joined by Alona Shchyholeva, Natasha Glassford and recent 5^th place finisher from the Cadet European Championships, Julia Marczak (Judo Sensei London).

Scotland claimed silver in the senior men’s event in 2022. This year they will be represented by Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Rachel Tytler (Pro Judo) and 5^th place finisher at last weekend’s Birmingham Junior European Cup, Gregor Miller (Tayside Judo Club).

Last years women’s silver medallists, Southern Area, enter with an entirely new line-up from 2022, but will be represented by British Champion, Summer Shaw (Camberley) and Simone Cross (Camberley).

Others to keep an eye on are Lewis Fryer (Rush Judo, NHC) who claimed silver at the Birmingham Junior European Cup last week and Isaac Hope (Bredakwai Judo Academy, North West) who was recently in action at the European Cadet Championships in Coimbra, Portugal.

Junior/Cadet

In the Junior and Cadet category, last years bronze medallists London, look like the team to beat in the boy’s category as recent European Cadet Championship representatives Luka Gigilashvili (Palavani Judo Club), Irakli Goginashvili (Palavani Judo Club), Peter Davies (Ealing Judo Club) and Derek Marczak (Judo Sensei London)are joined by Luke Davies (Ealing Judo Club).

NHC were last years champions defeating Scotland in the final.

NHC have two members of their 2022 team returning to defend their title as Ben Hasler and Owen Lambert are named in a 7-strong team.

For Scotland, Ross McWatt (Garioch Judo) and Noah Black (Clyde Judo) compete after recently representing GB Judo at the European Cadet Championships in Coimbra, Portugal as two of four returning judoka from 2022.

The Southern area claimed the Girl’s title in 2022 and will be led by recent Birmingham Junior European Cup champion, Charlotte Jenman (Tonbridge). Joining Jenman is Amelia Alder (Judo Club Osaka) was also recently in action in Coimbra.

The Midland area took silver in 2022 and have two team members returning for 2023, as Ace Edwards and Sophie Davis are named in the squad.

Fresh from 5^th place finishes at the European Cadet Championships and Birmingham Junior European Cup, respectively,  Julia Marczak (Judo Sensei London) and Maddy Birri (Ealing Judo Club) will also be in action for London in the Junior/Cadet category.

PreCadet and Minor

The gold medals last year were won by the Northern area and London in the girls and boys categories respectively with the NHC finishing second and Scotland and the Southern areas taking the bronze medals.
