Judoka selected for 2013 World University Games

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) have confirmed the Judo athletes selected to represent Great Britain (GB) at the 2013 World University Games (WUGs) in Kazan, Russia next month.

A GB delegation of 175 athletes will compete in Judo, Artistic Gymnastics, Badminton, Fencing, Football, Rugby 7’s, Shooting, Swimming and Tennis from 6 to 17 July. Of those, a team of four judokas have been selected to represent GB in the second largest multi-sport event in the world, after the Olympic Games.

Andrew Burns (University of East London, -90kg) who followed his gold medal at the 2012 World Cup in Belarus with silver at this year’s British Championships. Andrew is joined by Patrick Dawson (Heriot Watt University), selected in the -73kg category, who has two medals already this year, silver in the British Senior Trials and gold in Buenos Aires Pan-American competition, and Thomas Reed (St Mary’s University College, -81kg) who has three international gold medals to his name in addition to four silver and two gold medals in national senior championships.

The single female judo player selected is Megan Fletcher (University of Bristol, -70kg), Megan is returning to her second World University Games after competing in Shenzhen two years ago and has already won eight international gold medals plus earlier this year secured gold in the 2013 National Championships.
