Judo to debut at Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017

Judo will feature for the first time at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017. The Bahamas has been awarded the 2017 edition of the Games which will feature judo amongst seven sports in which 1000 young athletes will compete.

Judo will join Aquatics, Athletics, Boxing, Cycling, Rugby Sevens and Tennis, at the 2017 Games. The Commonwealth Youth Games are open for athletes aged between 14-18 which presents young judoka the opportunity to compete in a multi-sport event.

The announcement comes after the success of judo at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the inclusion of judo as a core sport from the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Speaking on the news, Judo England Chairman, Eddie Awford said: “This is great news for the sport and for our young judoka. The inclusion of judo in the Commonwealth Youth Games speaks volumes for the success of the sport at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and I’m delighted our young players will get the opportunity to compete on such a stage.”
