Gemma Gibbons awarded December Sky Sportswoman of the month

Gemma Gibbons has been voted the Sky Sportswoman of the Month for December 2015 after her historic medal at the Tokyo Grand Slam.

After several days voting on the Sky Sports website, Gibbons came out on top of the poll and was announced as the winner on this morning’s Sky Sportswomen show winning by 34% to 33% over short track speed skater Elise Christie.

Gibbons was chosen as one of seven sportswomen to be nominated for the award after becoming the first British woman to medal at the Tokyo Grand Slam. Gibbons had a tough route on her way to the podium twice producing exciting comeback victories.

Speaking on the award to Sportswomen, Gibbons said: “I’m really pleased and it was really nice finding out that people had been voting for me.

“The Asian leg is probably one of the hardest of the world tour and it was great to fight in China, Korea and Japan on back-to-back weekends and medal at all three of them.”

Also among the nominees for the award was Olympic taekwondo gold medalist Jade Jones, golfer Shanshan Feng and champion jockey Lizzie Kelly. However, the historic medal in Tokyo for Gibbons was enough to gain the award.

Congratulations to Gemma!
