GB Judoka set for Junior European Championships
The Junior European Judo Championships get underway tomorrow in The Hague, Netherlands with eight GB judoka in action over the four-day competition.
Thursday 7th – -48kg | -52kg | -57kg | -60kg | -66kg | Preliminary Rounds 09:00 | Final Block 15:00
Lewis Fryer (Rush Judo; Laurie Rush) will compete in the -60kg category following his gold medal at the Kaunas Junior European Cup before claiming silver at the Birmingham Junior European Cup.
Fryer enters as 6th seed and will face Hristo Hristov (BUL) in the opening round.
In the -52kg category, Charlotte Jenman (Tonbridge JC; Ben Urban) has made a seamless transition to the junior ranks following her 2022 success as a cadet. The 2022 Cadet European Championship bronze medallist picked up silver at the Kaunas Junior European Cup before topping the Birmingham Junior European Cup podium this summer.
Jenman will face Florian Badiceanu (ROU) in the opening round.
Friday 8th – -63kg | -70kg | -73kg | -81kg | Preliminary Rounds 09:30 | Final Block 15:00
Luke Davies (Ealing JC; Jo Crowley) has been selected alongside Eryk Neumann (Hardy Spicer 83; Fitzroy Davies) in the -73kg category.
Davies, who enters as 7th seed, has competed across the globe this year picking up a gold medal at the Lima Junior Panamerican Cup, silver at the Sarajevo Junior European Cup and bronze at the Tunis Junior African Cup.
The recent Skopje Junior European Cup bronze medallist will face Darko Topaloviv (BIH) in Round Two following an opening round bye.
Neumann meanwhile won bronze at the Kaunas Junior European Cup earlier this year and has been drawn against Otari Kvantidze (POR) in Round Two following an opening round bye.
Saturday 9th – -78kg | +78kg | -90kg | -100kg | +100kg | Preliminary Rounds 10:00 | Final Block 15:00
Selected in the +100kg category is Daniel Ede (Westcroft JC; Andrew Ede) who won back-to-back bronze medals at the Kaunas and Birmingham Junior European Cups before a 5th-place finish at the Paks Junior European Cup.
Ede has been drawn against Nikita Nikitenko (GER) in the opening round.
Anya Hassan (Middlesbrough JC; Garth Illingworth) is another judoka who has stepped up to the junior age group this year. The -78kg fighter narrowly missed out on a medal at the Kaunas and Birmingham Junior European Cups but returned from the Paks Junior European Cup with bronze.
Hassan has been drawn in Pool C and will face Emma Krapu (FIN) in the opening round.
Sunday 10th – Team Event | Preliminary Rounds 09:00 | Final Block 14:00
GB Judo will also contest the team event on the final day, and have selected Jacob Callaghan (Destination Judo; Colin Woods) and Katie Mills (Camberely Judo Club, Luke Preston) to join the team.
The Great Britain team have been drawn to face Portugal in their opening round contest in Pool B.
