It was a tough weekend for GB Judo at the Prague European Open (Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March) with each of the British judoka failing to make it into the latter stages.

Gregg Varey came unstuck against Poland’s Lukasz Golus in the first round at -66kg. The Polish judoka winning by ippon inside the first minute.

At -73kg Dan Powell lost in slightly controversial circumstances to Carlos Aguilar Vega (ESP) in his first round contest. The British judoka threw the Spaniard but was deemed to have committed a head dive and was given hansoku-make.

Eric Ham saw off the challenge of Laszlo David (ROU) in his first contest as he forced the Romanian to pick up three shidos. In the second round through he was unable to get the better of Belarus’s Vadzim Shoka as the older judoka threw him for two waza-ari to take the win.

On the second day Adam Hoshal lost out to Spain’s Jose Maria Mendiola Izquieta in their -81kg first round contest.

The Spanish judoka took an early lead by waza-ari before finishing the contest in the final minute in newaza.
