Disappointment for British athletes on day two of European Championships
It was a disappointing day for British athletes in the second day of the 2013 European Judo Championships in Budapest.
Following Ashley McKenzie’s success on the first day, taking a bronze medal at -60kg, it was the turn of middleweights with GB representatives in the women’s -70kg and the men’s 73kg and -81kg categories.
IJF Samsun Grand Prix winner Sally Conway led the GB hopes in the -70kg category and after a first round bye, she came up against Anka Pogacnik. Just seconds into the contest, the young Slovenian caught Conway for a Yuko and despite the GB athlete’s best efforts she was unable to register a score and get back into the contest.
Megan Fletcher also competed in the -70kg category and took a strong first round victory over Russia’s Ekaterina Denisenkova by yuko.
This set up a second round contest against experienced Dutch athlete Linda Bolder. Despite fighting hard Fletcher went a waza-ari down before being held down for ippon just inside four minutes.
Patrick Dawson and Jan Gosiewski represented GB in a strong men’s -73kg category with Dawson narrowly losing out by a yuko to former world bronze medallist Musa Mogushkov of Russia, whilst Gosiewski was defeated by waza-ari and yuko by Israeli athlete Sagi Muki.
Tom Davis also suffered an early exit, receiving hansoku make following four shidos against Ukrainian athlete Vitalii Dudchyk.
Tomorrow is the final day of competition and sees Welsh judoka Natalie Powell round’s up the women’s action at -78kg whilst Ben Fletcher fights at -100kg. Royal Marine Chris Sherrington competes at +100kg alongside Matthew Clempner.
The action will be streamed live at www.eju.net with British Judo providing regular updates through Twitter, Facebook and www.britishjudo.org.uk.
Action starts at 10:00 BST (11:00 CET) with the final block commencing at 14:30 BST (15:30 CET).
