There were two bronze medals at the European Cup in Malaga for heavyweights Ben Fletcher (-100kg) and Neil Schofield (+100kg) on Sunday.

Fletcher took his first medal since his comeback from an injury that forced him to pull out of the Commonwealth Games.

In his first contest he bounced back from a loss against Alejandro San Martin Carrera and beat Marc Fortuny of Spain by ippon for a place in the bronze medal match. With only one shido to three against Shamil Magomedov of Russia, he took the prize.

Schofield took an early ippon victory over Hugo Angelo of Portugal but then lost to Thomas Pille of Germany by ippon. He took the bronze after beating Nicola Becchetti of Italy by ippon.

The final day of the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam saw Commonwealth Champion Sarah Adlington gain fifth place and along with it 100 points towards qualification for Rio 2016. Adlington (+78kg) fought for bronze against Svitlana Iaromka of Ukraine and lost out by ippon.

Her journey included an ippon win over Joanna Jaworska of Poland and Gulsah Kocaturk of Turkey. However, she lost her semi-final against Song Yu of China before fighting for bronze.

Luck was not with fellow Glasgow 2014 champion Natalie Powell (-78kg) who lost her first round fight against Guusje Steenhuis of the Netherlands by ippon.

Commonwealth bronze medallist Gary Hall (-90kg) won his first match by ippon against home judoka Mihail Marchitan but then lost against Christophe Lambert of Germany by ippon to exit the competition in the second round.
