British Masters is a huge success

The British Masters Championships took place at Glades Leisure Centre in Kidderminster on Saturday, October 18, and this year saw a record number of entries.

There were more than 280 entrants altogether – an all-time record that beat the 270 last year’s entries that were themselves a record.

British Judo Association Chairman Kerrith Brown and Chief Executive Andrew Scoular were on hand to present some of the awards along with Ronnie Saez, BJA Vice Chair.

During the competition there was a mix of experience on the mat ranging from M1 right through to M10 for the men; including MK1 and MK2. Females were represented from F1 to F3.

This year saw more than 34 ladies enter the competition – a feather in the cap for Samurai Judo Club that ran this and the first ever women’s veterans event back in 1992.

There were at least two 7th Dan’s and a sprinkling of 6th Dans on the mat.

As well as all the black belts taking part, there was also a section for blue belt and below to allow older players coming into judo for the first time to take part in it.

Andrew Haffner, whose club organised the event, said: “I would like to thank all the officials who helped and the team of workers who worked behind the scenes.”

Kerrith Brown said: “It was a privilege to be with our players at the Masters competition in Kidderminster last Saturday.

“British Judo continues to be proud of all its players, from juniors, cadets, elite players, especially our Masters who continue with their aims to achieve highly in Judo competition.

“This has been the case for many, many years for most of our Masters and long may it continue. Congratulations to all who took part.”
