British judoka looking to make a big impression in Tbilisi
14 Britons will be competing at the Sport Palace in Tbilisi, Georgia this weekend in the first of back-to-back Grand Prixs.
431 judoka from over 70 countries will be in Georgia to take part in the third Grand Prix competition of the year.
Kimberley Renicks (-48kgs), Nathon Burns and Gregg Varey (both -66kgs) will kick off British involvement at the 3rd Tbilisi Grand Prix when they take to the mat on Friday morning.
Saturday will see former Junior World Championships bronze medallist Jemima Yeats-Brown take her Grand Prix bow when she competes at this level for the first time in the -70kgs category.
Alice Schlesinger and Gemma Howell will both be in action in the -63kgs, whilst Jan Gosiewski will be competing in the -73kgs. Elsewhere in the -81kgs Devizes’ Tom Reed will be alongside world number 1 and local favourite Avtandili Tchrikishvili.
Seven Britons will be in action on the final day of the event with Andrew Burns and Frazer Chamberlain both looking to make an impact in the -90kgs category. Georgia’s 2015 -90kgs Junior World Champion Beka Gviniashvili will be the neutrals one to watch on Sunday fighting in the -100kg category.
Ben Fletcher will be seeking extra points to bring greater certainty of his qualification for Rio in the -100kgs.
Chris Sherrington will be competing in his first Grand Prix event since he returned to the sport earlier this month after two years in retirement. The 2014 Commonwealth Games +100kg gold medallist stormed to victory in his first competition back at the Uster-Zurich European Cup and will be seeking more success in Tbilisi.
Welsh judoka Natalie Powell goes to Georgia as world number 9 in the -78kgs category having won bronze at the Paris Grand Slam and coming fifth at the Havana and Dusseldorf Grand Prix earlier this year.
Edinburgh’s Sarah Adlington who picked up two bronze medals earlier this month at the Pan American Open’s in Lima and Buenos Aires, will want to continue her good form in the +78kgs and obtain some more all important qualification points for Rio.
