All Eyes on Zagreb for the European Championships

The European Championships get underway tomorrow with 10 GB judoka in action in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Championships mark the start of a busy few weeks, as we enter the final throws of Olympic qualification, with the Dushanbe Grand Slam to follow next week before the World Championships in Abu Dhabi in mid-May.

Thursday 25th April

Ryecroft Judo Clubs Sam Hall and Charlie Young will both compete in the -66kg category. Both Hall and Young both claimed bronze medals at the Warsaw European Open earlier this year.

Lele Nairne finished 7th at the 2023 European Championships and the -57kg fighter will be looking to gain more Olympic qualification points in Zagreb to strengthen her Paris bid.

Friday 26th April

Mima Yeats-Brown and Kelly Petersen-Pollard will both compete in the -70kg category. Yeats-Brown finished 5th at last year’s World Championships whilst Petersen-Pollard is a former Junior European champion.

Lachlan Moorhead currently sits in an Olympic qualifying position, courtesy of the Continental quota places, but will be looking to further secure his position with a strong performance in Zagreb. The -81kg fighter is a former Junior European bronze medallist.

Saturday 27th April

Emma Reid competes at her third senior European Championships. The -78kg fighter has recorded 7th and 5th place finishes at the Portugal Grand Prix and Antalya Grand Slam respectively in 2024.

Jamal Petgrave will compete in his third senior European Championships. The -90kg fighter has claimed bronze and silver medals at the Junior European and U23 Championships respectively.

Rhys Thompson is joined by debutant Oliver Barratt in the -100kg category. Barratt claimed silver at the U23 European Championships in 2023 and has claimed two bronze medals on the European Cup circuit this year in Riga and Dubrovnik. Thompson meanwhile has a bronze medal to his name from the Warsaw European Open earlier this year.

Chelsie Giles, Nekoda Smythe-Davis, Lucy Renshall and Natalie Powell have all withdrawn due to injury.

The Draw is due to take place at 3pm (BST). You can watch all the action from the European Championships  LIVE at live.ijf.org each day.
