Barratt claims silver at European U23 Championships
Oliver Barratt (Dragons Judo Academy; Stephen Abberley) continued GB Judo’s great medal record at the European U23 Championships taking silver on the final day of the Championships.
Barratt was the sole GB judo competitor in action on the final day of championships in Potsdam, Germany. Following an opening-round bye, Barratt overcame Erekle Bazierishvili (GEO) and Lars Vissers (NED) to win his pool and book his place in the semi-finals, both victories coming by way of submission after Barratt applied a strangle.
Barratt secured his place in the final with victory against Viktor Adam (SVK). Barratt went a waza-ari score up early in the contest, before later throwing Adam for ippon score.
In the final, Barratt faced Daniele Accogli (ITA), but was unfortunately thrown for ippon score, meaning he had to settle for silver.
On the opening day, Tatum Keen (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas) placed 5th in the -52kg category. Keen defeated Melaniia Vodianna (UKR) in round two, following an opening round bye, before defeat to eventual bronze medallist Ana Viktorija Puljiz (CRO) progressed her to the repechage. Keen defeated Mila Petrovic (BIH) to progress to the bronze medal contest but was narrowly defeated by Aydan Valiyeva (AZE) by a single waza-ari score.
