Reid wins bronze in Portugal
On the final day of the Portugal Grand Prix, Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy) ensured GB Judo would be leaving with 3 medals as she won bronze in the -78kg category.
Reid, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Portugal Grand Prix in 2022, finishing 5th, entered the competition in round 2, following an opening round bye.
Reid overcame Chloe Buttigieg (FRA) and Patricija Brolih (SLO) to win her Pool and progress to the Semi-Finals, both victories coming after her opponents picked up three penalty shidos.
Reid was defeated by 18-year-old senior World Championship bronze medallist Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko (UKR) in the semi-final and progressed to the bronze medal contest to face defending Portugal Grand Prix champion Hyunji Yoon (KOR).
Reid, like many of her teammates, showed just how strong she is on the ground as she pinned her opponent for what seemed like an eternity to secure an ippon score to secure the bronze medal.
In the -90kg category, Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft JC; Andy Ede) defeated Karl Baathe (SWE) in the second round following an opening round bye. Petgrave registered a waza-ari score in the opening 30-seconds, before securing victory with a second waza-ari score with a little under 90-seconds of the contest remaining.
In round 3, Petgrave was defeated by Ivaylo Ivanov (BUL) by two waza-ari scores, who later went on to win gold.
In the -100kg category there were opening-round defeats for Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC; George Hyslop) and Harry Lovell-Hewitt (Stroud JC; Richard Neale).
Thompson was defeated by Miklos Crijenics (HUN) after the Hungarian judoka countered a Thompson attack for an ippon score, while Lovell-Hewitt was defeated with two waza-ari scores by Celio Dias (POR).
