7th for Lucy Renshall at Masters
On the second day of the IJF World Masters in Jerusalem, Lucy Renshall (SKK; Pete Blood) recorded her career-best finish at the Masters in finishing 7th.
Following an opening-round bye, Renshall made light work of her Round 2 contest against Renata Zachova (CZE). Renshall registered a waza-ari score in the opening 15-seconds before transitioning into newaza to register an ippon score.
Renshall faced Miku Takaichi (JPN) in the Quarter-Final, the judoka who she faced in the opening round of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and a 3x World Masters champion.
Renshall came close to registering the first score, but it was the Japanese judoka who struck first, registering a waza-ari score with a little under 90-seconds remaining of the contest. Renshall attacked hard in the closing stages but was unable to find a score to level or win the contest.
The result saw Renshall progress to the Repechage to face Katharina Haecker (AUS). Haecker registered a waza-ari as the contest entered the final minute. Renshall responded to going a score down by trying to level the contest in the next exchange, but was caught and thrown for ippon score.
The result sees Renshall finish 7th, to match her performance at the World Championships earlier this year.
Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies) suffered an opening round defeat to Gabriella Willems (BEL). With nothing between the pair, the contest entered Golden Score where, with 90-seconds elapsed on the clock, a Petersen-Pollard attack was countered for waza-ari score.
In the -81kg category, Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) was defeated by Mihail Latisev (MDA) in the opening round. Moorhead went a waza-ari score down after 90-seconds before conceding a second waza-ari score with 90-seconds remaining.
Tomorrow is the third and final day of competition with three more GB judoka in action. Natalie Powell (Irfon JC; Mark Earl) and Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy) compete in the -78kg category, whilst Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft JC; Andy Ede) will compete in the -90kg category.
Preliminary Round action starts at 08:30am (GMT) with Final Block scheduled to start at 15:00.
