Reid 5th at Baku Grand Slam
On the final day of the Baku Grand Slam Emma Reid finished in 5th place whilst Natalie Powell finished 7th.
Following an opening round bye, Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy). defeated Patricia Sampaio (POR) in Round 2. Sampaio picked up three penalty shidos to see Reid progress to the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-final contest against Alice Bellandi (ITA), Reid picked up a second shido in the opening stages of Golden Score before being awarded a decisive third shido which saw her opponent progress to the semi-finals, whilst Reid progressed to the Repechage.
In the Repechage contest, Reid found herself with two shidos with the contest in Golden Score. She went to ground and pinned her opponent, Giorgia Stangherlin (ITA) with a 20-second hold down for ippon score to progress to the bronze medal contest.
Reid faced Loriana Kuka (KOS) for bronze. With nothing between the pair, the contest entered Golden Score. Reid survived one attempt by Kuka to apply an arm lock but was unable to defend against a second and was forced to tap out, handing Kuka the victory and bronze medal. The result saw Reid finish in 5th.
Natalie Powell (Irfon JC; Mark Earl) also had an opening round bye before a Round 2 walk-on after her opponent, Petrunjela Pavic (CRO) withdrew following the draw. This progress Powell straight through to the quarter-finals to face Natascha Ausma (NED).
Powell unfortunately picked up three penalty shidos in the quarter-final contest, which saw her progress to the Repechage where she faced Guusje Steenhuis (NED) for a place in the bronze medal contest. With the contest nearing the end of the mandatory 4-minutes, Steenhuis registered a throw for ippon score to progress. The result saw Powell finish in 7th position
