GB judoka set for European U23 Championships and Perth Oceania Open

This week sees GB Judoka compete on opposite sides of the globe as GB Judo have judoka competing in Sarajevo at the European U23 Championships and the Perth Oceania Open.

Friday

Following some impressive performances at junior level this year, including a 5th place finish at the recent European Junior Championships, Tatum Keen (Club: Bradley Stoke; Coach: Pete Douglas) steps up to the U23 age group and will compete alongside Sian Bobrowska (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies).

7th seed Keen has an opening round bye whilst Bobrowska has been drawn against Alessia Tedeschi (ITA).

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Finlay Allan (Camberley; Luke Preston) is joined by Charlie Young (Ryecroft Judokwai; Paul Young) in the -66kg category.

Allan has been drawn against Artyom Ghalachyan (ARM) whilst Young has an opening-round contest against Diego Alvaz-Duarte (ESP).

In the -73kg category, Ethan Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas) who has recently represented GB Judo at the recent World and European Junior Championships has been drawn against Bayram Kandemir (TUR) in the opening round.

Saturday

Ryan Rijksen-Salman (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas) is another fighter who has represented GB judo at both World and European Junior Championships this year. Rijksen-Salman has been drawn against Ismayil Zamanov (AZE) in the opening round.

Oliver Barratt (Dragons Judo Academy; Stephen Abberley) recently made his return to competition following injury. Competing in the -100kg category, Barratt will face Francesco Basso (ITA) in the opening round.

This weekend also sees a number of our Paris Potential fighters compete at the Perth Oceania Open. The event carries the same number of Olympic qualification points as a Grand Prix event; therefore a number of judoka have made the journey to compete as the event as it forms part of the GB Judo Paris Olympic Qualification Programme.

The opening day sees Commonwealth Games silver medallists Sam Hall (Club: Ryecroft; Coach: Fitzroy Davies) and Acelya Toprak (Darren Hawney & Fitzroy Davies; Metro Judo Club & Relentless Judo) in action. Toprak recently finished 7th at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam whilst Hall competes for the first time following the recent World Championships.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Amy Platten (Redbridge JC; Guy Platten) will also compete on the opening day. Platten also recently competed at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam.

Toprak will be joined by Lele Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas) in the -57kg category whilst Michael Fryer (Rush Judo; Laurie Rush) and Eric Ham (Glossop; Geoff Ham) will also be in action.

Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft; Ian Oliver) is in action again following her bronze medal at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam last weekend. Yeats-Brown is the only female GB judoka in action on Sunday. She will be joined by Commonwealth Games champions Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) and Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft; Andy Ede) who fight in the -81kg and -90kg categories respectively and Commonwealth Games -100kg bronze medallist Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC; George Hyslop).

Preliminary Round action at the European U23 Championships will start at 8:30am(BST) on Friday and 09:30am on Saturday. Final Block will start at 15:00 on each day.

Preliminary Round action at the Perth Oceania Open will start at 03:00am (BST) on Saturday and 02:00am (GMT) on Sunday with Final block to start at 10:00am (BST) on Saturday and 09:00 (GMT) on Sunday.
