Looking ahead to British Judo Junior and Senior Championships

We return the the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield this weekend as our Junior and Senior judoka compete to be crowned British Champion 2021.

The weekend will see 29 British champions crowned across the Junior and Senior age groups with a number of our Tokyo 2020 Olympians, and a Paralympian, due to compete; including Olympic bronze medallist Chelsie Giles.

We take a look at each age group and highlight the ones to watch ahead of what promises to be an exciting weekend of domestic judo.

Junior Men

Last weekend’s Cadet Boys champion Kyras Chambers-Edutie returns to battle it out in the -55kg category.

GB Judo Cadet representative Harry Zain-Prosser competes in the -60kg category, with competition likely to come in the form of Dinari Dawkins and Joshua Shipp.

GB Judo European Cadet representatives Shaun Malazarte and Artur Patemian compete in a competitive -66kg category. Alexander Rijksen-Salman and Jack Rowley will both be eyeing the top step of the podium.

Recent Cadet champion Ben Levy returns to compete in the -73kg category. Caleb Drysdale was the 2019 Cadet champion, while GB Judo European Cadet representative Ethan Nairne is also one to watch after taking silver in 2019. Other judoka to watch are Harry Le Mare, Harry Cox and Luke Davies.

European Cadet representative David Somerville competes in an open -81kg category with recent Cadet silver medallist Joe Bygate returning for a second weekend.

William Andrews bids to add the Junior -90kg title to the Cadet title he won last weekend. A challenge will come in the form Ryan Rijksen-Salman.

Three of the 2019 -90kg Cadet medallists return in the -100kg category as champion Gregor Miller is joined by bronze medallists Jake McKenna and Jake Mair.

Junior Women

2019 -40kg Cadet champion Jenna Massey competes in the -48kg category whilst the -52kg category features strong favourite and 2021 British Judo Junior Female Athlete of the Year Tatum Keen. Keen will be challenged by recent Cadet champion Charlotte Jenman, whilst Maddy Birri and Ella Hampson will also challenge for medals.

Naimh Southgate headlines the -57kg category and will face competition from Rachel Jackson and recent Cadet silver medallist Sunny Doig.

2019 Cadet champion Holly Devall will compete against 2021 Cadet champion Olivia Delahunty in the -63kg category. Sophie Wood who took bronze last weekend also returns.

2019 Cadet champion Gwen Lloyd competes in the -70kg category. Last weekend’s Cadet bronze medallist Nicole Wood also competes.

2019 Champion Cordelia Gregory returns to defend her -78kg title. She will be challenged by 2019 Cadet silver medallist Ruby Wiltshire and bronze medallist Angel Anegbeh.

Senior Men

Zagreb Grand Prix gold medallist and Abu Dhabi Grand Slam bronze medallist Sam Hall leads the -60kg entries. The Scottish trio of Dylan Munro, Nordine Adrif and Neil MacDonald will all challenge Hall for gold.

The Home Nations will do battle in the -66kg as Scotland’s Alex Short takes on Welsh judoka Gregg Varey and England judoka Charlie Young and Michael Fryer.

Sarajevo European Cup silver medallist Daniel Powell leads the -73kg category, the 2019 champion will be joined by silver medallist Aiden Moffat. There are a number of youngsters that will be looking to cause an upset, as Ethan Nairne, Harry Le Mare and Harry Cox all compete.

Abu Dhabi Grand Slam bronze medallist Lachlan Moorhead leads the -81kg category. He will be challenged by London 2012 Olympian Danny Williams.

2019 champion and recent Dubrovnik European Cup gold medallist Jamal Petgrave returns to defend his -90kg title. He will be joined by bronze medallist James Reid and 2019 -81kg bronze medallist Chris Kumesu-Egri.

Cailin Calder returns to defend his 2019 -100kg title. British Judo Junior Male Athlete of the Year Max Gregory, who was silver medallist in 2019 also returns.

Wesley Greenidge leads the +100kg entrants, the 2019 silver medallist will face competition from 2x Paralympian Jack Hodgson.

Senior Women

Current European U23 Championship bronze medallist Amy Platten leads the -48kg entries. 2019 European Junior and U23 bronze medallist Yasmin Javadian returns to defend her -52kg title. Challenges will come from Tatum Keen and Chloe Robyns-Landricombe.

The -57kg category promises to be one of the categories of the weekend with Olympic bronze medallist Chelsie Giles taking on Dubrovnik European Cup gold medallist Acelya Toprak and Sarajevo European Open bronze medallist Lele Nairne. Keep an eye on youngster Niamh Southgate as she steps up from the Junior ranks.

The -63kg category is dominated by three time 2021 Grand Slam gold medallist Lucy Renshall who is currently ranked 4th in the world.

Kelly Petersen-Pollard leads the -70kg entries. The Abu Dhabi and Baku Grand Slam bronze medallist has rocket up the world rankings this year and currently sits in 16th. Petersen-Pollard will look to defend her 2019 title.

Abu Dhabi Grand Slam gold medallist Emma Reid dominates the -78kg entries. The 2019 silver medallist will be challenged by bronze medallists Rachel Tytler and Cordelia Gregory.

Tokyo 2020 Olympian Sarah Adlington competes for the first time since the Games earlier this year. 2019 champion Emily Ritchie returns to defend her title along with silver and bronze medallists Kate Saunders and Sarah Hawkes.

Registration and Weigh In:

Registration and Weigh in will remain on Friday 10th December 2021 or our Junior competitors. However we will now stagger the weigh in times to reduce the number of judoka at weigh in at any one given time. Weigh in will run from 18:30-20:30.
