As we approach World Mental Health Day on Thursday 10th October, at InsideOut we are thrilled to be supporting the members of BJA in looking after their mental health.

As you may know, the focus for this year’s WMHD is ‘mental health at work’. To celebrate WMHD 2024, we’ve put together a couple of resources that you may find useful for your own consideration and/or to share with your team.

First up, I’ve included a few tips/ideas below for creating a positive mental health culture in the workplace. I have also referenced the Menopause and Financial Anxiety guides below.

  1. Encourage Open Conversations: Foster a safe space where employees feel comfortable discussing mental health without judgment.
  2. Promote Work-Life Balance: Encourage employees to set boundaries and respect personal time.
  3. Encourage Setting Healthy Boundaries: Support employees in maintaining a balance between work and personal time. Healthy boundaries protect energy levels and prevent burnout, helping everyone stay focused and motivated.
  4. Promote Micro-Breaks: Remind your team to take short breaks throughout the day. Quick stretches, deep breaths, or a short walk can refresh minds and improve concentration, helping them stay sharp and productive.
  5. Introduce a Gratitude Practice: Encourage employees to take a moment to reflect on something positive each day. A simple gratitude practice can shift mindsets and create a more optimistic work environment, which boosts morale.
  6. Provide Access to Resources: Make tools like Remi and InsideOut’s therapy platform available so support is available 24/7, without the need for referrals.
  7. Educate on Mental Health Topics: Share resources on issues like menopause and financial anxiety, often overlooked but impactful.
  8. Host Wellbeing Activities: From mindfulness sessions to group walks, activities can help relieve stress and build camaraderie.

Recognize and Appreciate: Acknowledge team efforts and achievements to boost morale and mental health

Mental Health and Wellbeing

At British Judo, we aim to promote a sustainable membership programme where all people have the best opportunity to have Positive Mental Health and wellbeing.

Positive mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual is able to realise their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can perform productively, and is able to contribute to their community.

We also aim to ensure there is appropriate support for those experiencing Mental Health Problems.

A Mental Health Problem is a pattern of behaviour, experiences, thoughts and feelings that causes significant distress and/or impairment of daily functioning and/or difficulties in relationships with others.

Such distress or impairments are most likely to be experienced over a period of time and are not easily alleviated by an individual’s typical coping strategies.

We support our colleagues in Mental Health 1st Aid England who state: MHFA England launches new Mental Health First Aid course  · MHFA England

Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAiders®) are crucial to helping boost employee wellbeing as we adjust to a profoundly changed workplace environment. But while MHFAiders® work to support others, they need support, too.

At MHFA England, providing support, building confidence and growing a community to drive change is crucial to us. It isn’t a footnote or a half-hearted line in the small print. We’ve spent 15 years generating conversation around workplace mental health, and we understand that being an effective MHFAider® requires learning and support beyond training.

That’s why we offer ongoing support to help MHFAiders® feel confident and empowered – long after they’ve completed their training course.

We would encourage clubs to look at funding some one (could be a CWO) to be your MH&W champion and complete a MH 1st Aid Course.

Using an App to boost resilience, reduce stress or improve mental health

Have you tried out any apps for improving your own resilience, quality of sleep or working on aspects of your mental health?

Benefits of using Apps for Forming New Habits

  • Many of us carry our phone with us most of the time and have easy access to the app.
  • Apps can push reminders to us so that we keep up a regular practice.
  • Many apps still work when they are offline or at least have an offline mode.
  • Apps often work faster than websites.
  • A phone can be discreetly used during time, which some might see as wasted – on the train, bus, waiting in a queue, etc.
  • Phone apps can use other facilities on the phone like GPS (a running/walking app), camera (taking photos of things that make you feel good)…. etc.
