At British Judo, we aim to promote a sustainable membership programme where all people have the best opportunity to have Positive Mental Health and wellbeing.

Positive mental health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual is able to realise their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can perform productively, and is able to contribute to their community.

We also aim to ensure there is appropriate support for those experiencing Mental Health Problems.

A Mental Health Problem is a pattern of behaviour, experiences, thoughts and feelings that causes significant distress and/or impairment of daily functioning and/or difficulties in relationships with others.

Such distress or impairments are most likely to be experienced over a period of time and are not easily alleviated by an individual’s typical coping strategies.

The Mental Health Continuum is a scale used to identify early signs of mental health concerns, that can be effectively treated. This model recognises the spectrum of health concerns, be they mental or physical, that may impact people throughout their lives.

What’s really helpful is the fact that it’s four options, which eliminates having to distinguish different feelings that aren’t necessary comfortable to share out loud. It’s easier to just say that today, I’m “reacting” and have it being understood correctly.

Another important thing about the Mental Health Continuum is that there is a place for everyone on it, regardless the state of mental health or mental illness. This reduces stigma significantly because everyone fits in. As the picture above indicates, there’s a back and forth motion that signifying change. This mean that anyone who is “healthy” can have times in their life when they are “reacting” and those who are “injured” have the ability to be “healthy”.

Who can I speak to if I have concerns about mental health?

If you are concerned about your own or someone else’s Mental Health, the most important thing is to speak to someone you trust. If there is an immediate risk to you or anybody else, you should contact the emergency services on 999.
