Tough day in Kazakhstan for British middleweights
Four British judoka took to the mat in Almaty today, on the second day of the Kazakhstan Grand Prix. Owen Livesey progressed to the final 16 of the -81kg category but was defeated by Frank De Wit (NED) to halt his progress.
Livesey started the day in round two after a bye in the first round. His second round match up resulted in a victory over Moldovan, Dorin Gotonoaga, with two shidos (penalties) difference between the pair. However, Livesey was defeated by Frank De Wit (NED) in the next round who threw Livesey for waza-ari and then held down for win.
Tom Reed (-81kg) faced 22 year old Vladimir Zoloev of Kyrgyzstan in his first round contest. The contest went the full five minutes but it was Zoloev who took the win, finishing the contest with a yuko score difference.
Danny Williams (-73kg) started the day with a victory over home fighter, Nurlan Orazalin, defeating the Kazakh judoka with two shidos the difference after the five minutes. Williams then faced world number 10, Nyam-Ochir Sainjargal (MGL). In a close fought contest, it was Sainjargal who took the victory, throwing for yuko in the closing minute of the contest while Williams was on the attack.
Jan Gosiewski (-73kg) lost out in the first round by a waza-ari score against Italian judoka, Enrico Parlati.
Six British judoka will be striving for medals on the final day of the Almaty Grand Prix tomorrow. Frazer Chamberlain (-90kg), Andy Burns (-90kg), Ben Fletcher (-100kg), Chris Sherrington (+100kg), Gemma Gibbons (-78kg) and Sarah Adlington will be in action from 5am (BST).
