Busy weekend across two continents
British Junior and Cadet judoka were in action over the weekend in both Europe and South America with some strong showings across the board.
Brazil International Teams Cups
The British team finished fifth at the International Teams Cup in Salvador, Brazil after three days of exciting competition against some high quality opposition.
On Friday 6 May the British team took on a Japanese squad that had won the Team competition at the 2015 Junior World Championships in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Peter Miles (-60kg) made a strong start and put GB one-nil ahead however after that it was all Japan as they ran out 6-1 winners after a number of close contests.
Dropping into the repechage a day later against Germany the British team came out 4-3 winners with Miles, Neil MacDonald (-66kg) and Dan Powell (-73kg) taking GB out to a 3-0 lead before Adam Hall (-100kg) secured the win.
Sunday 8 may’s bronze medal match saw them take on hosts Brazil, who had a number of Junior World medallists in their team. It proved a match too far as the hosts ran out 7-0 winners with some exciting judo on show.
Kaunas Junior European Cup
It proved to be a tough weekend for the Juniors out in Lithuania on 7-8 May with none of the players finishing inside the top eight. However there were some solid performances including ninth places for Stephanie Walker (-52kg), Abbie Blackie (-57kg) and Valentino Volante (+100kg).
Cluj Napoca Cadet European Cup
It proved a more fruitful weekend for the Cadet judoka out in Romania with four bronze medals secured in total alongside one fifth and two seventh place finishes.
Amy Platten (-44kg), Molly Harvey (-48kg), Yasmin Javadian (-52kg) and Bethany Meadows (+70kg) all finished on the podium after strong shows across the two days with Kelly Petersen-Pollard (-70kg) finishing in fifth while Chloe Nunn (-70kg) and Joshua Giles (-55kg) securing seventh place finishes.
