First junior medal for Petgrave

British judoka were in action at the Lignano Junior European Cup in Italy on April 9 and 10. Jamal Petgrave (-90kg) picked up his first ever Junior European Cup medal as he won bronze coming through six contests in total.

After solid opening wins over Stefan Micic (SER) and Apor Toth (HUN) in his first two contest Petgrave lost out to Jakub Ozimek (POL) in the quarter-final which forced him into the repechage.

The Westcroft judoka recovered well with two dominant wins over Denis Sajher (SLO) and Bence Berenyi (HUN). Against Sajher Petgrave scored for waza-ari and three yukos while he was able to score for both waza-ari and ippon against Berenyi with just a minute and 14 seconds on the clock. In the bronze medal match with Sulejman Islamhanov (AUS) Petgrave continued his superb run of form with a win by ippon just under 90 seconds into the contest securing his place on the podium.

There were also hard fought fight and seventh place finishes for Peter Miles (-60kg) and Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz (-63kg).

Britain’s junior judoka will next be in action at the St. Petersburg Junior European Cup in Russia on 16-17 April.
