Weekend medal success in Europe

Jodie Caller (-57kg) continued her good start to 2016 with gold at the ‘Iliadis Cup’ the Athens Junior European Cup on Saturday 2 April.

Having picked up silver in Coimbra last month, Caller was gunning for gold which would match her result from the 2015 competition.

The British judoka made a strong start winning her first contest by ippon over Turkey’s Meltem Dindar before following that up with a win on shidos against Gimena Laffeuillade (ARG).

Caller then secured her spot in the final with another ippon win this time over Michaela Kulikova (CZE) setting up a gold medal contest with Ariel Bezalel (ISR). A single shido was enough to give Caller her seventh Junior European Cup medal.

Fellow -57kg judoka Natasha Fraser just missed out on a medal losing in the bronze contest to Merve Unlu (TUR) with a waza-ari to the Turkish athlete proving the difference.

At the Dubrovnik European Judo Cup in Croatia Jemima Yeats-Brown continued her move up to -70kg with bronze. After winning her first contest scoring ippon and waza-ari against Maya Thoyer (FRA) she had a close semi-final with Italy’s Carola Paissoni losing out on the final by two shidos to one.

The British judoka recovered well though and won her bronze medal contest with Petrunjela Pavic (CRO) scoring waza-ari and yuko to secure her place on the podium.
