Three continents and four competitions for British judoka

This weekend senior and junior British judoka are in action across three different continents with senior competitions at the Casablanca and Buenos Aires Continental Opens while the IJF Junior World Tour starts at Coimbra from Saturday 12 March to Sunday 13 March.

Buenos Aires Pan American Open

The second Pan American Open of the year gives ten British athletes the chance to pick up valuable Rio Olympic qualification points and medals with many of the same players hoping to back up and improve on their results from the Lima Pan American Open the weekend before while Andrew Melbourne (+100kg) competes in his first continental open of the year.

Owen Livesey (-81kg) and Sarah Adlington (+78kg) both picked up bronze medals in Lima while Frazer Chamberlain (-90kg) and Danny Williams (-73kg) came fifth with Kim Renicks (-48kg), Nathon Burns (-66kg) and Andy Burns (-90kg) finishing in seventh.

Casablanca African Open

Ten more British judoka will be stepping on the mat over in Morocco with some players looking to take another step on the road to the Rio Olympics with others hoping to gain valuable competition experience.

Megan and Ben Fletcher are both in action with Ben (-100kg) hoping to solidify his place in direct qualification while Megan (-70kg) will aim to keep the pressure on Sally Conway.

Jemima Duxberry (-78kg) continues her return from serious injury at her new weight category while both Amy Livesey and Gemma Howell (-63kg) will have their eyes on a podium finish.

Coimbra Junior European Cup

43 young British judoka will be hoping to make a good start to the year in the first IJF Junior World Tour event of 2016 in Portugal. Last year British players finished second overall in the medal table including gold medals for Lubjana Piovesana (-63kg) and Peter Miles (-60kg) both of whom will be hoping to match that result yet again.

There is also an opportunity for the younger members of the team including Olivia Piechota (-48kg) and Wesley Greenidge (+100kg) to pick up results early in the year.

Zagreb Cadet European Cup

14 British judo players are competing in the fourth Cadet European Cup of 2016 in Croatia with 2015 British champion Amy Platten (-44kg) among those in action.
