Seventh for McKenzie in Havana
Ashley McKenzie’s seventh was the highlight was British Judo on the first day of the Havana Grand Prix on Friday 22 January.
The -60kg fighter, a bronze medallist in 2013, produced some superb judo in his first two contests winning both with two waza-ari scores against Sergio Pessoa (CAN) and Jose Ramos (GUA).
However in his quarter-final he came undone against last year’s European Games silver medallist Orkhan Safarov (AZE) as the British judoka went down by yuko and waza-ari and was unable to claw it back before the end of the contest.
In the repechage McKenzie took on Turkey’s Sahin Ahmet Kaba, whom he had lost to at the 2015 Glasgow European Open. The British judoka thought he had gone ahead with a yuko score but that was overturned and given to the Turkish fighter who did enough after that to take the win.
In the -52kg category Kelly Edwards was making a comeback after a long injury lay-off and produced some good judo against Laura Gomez (ESP) but was caught and held down for ippon by her Spanish opponent with less than 30 seconds left on the clock.
Saturday will see Megan Fletcher (-70kg) looking to back up some strong form at the back end of 2015 as she takes on Roxane Taeymans (BEL).
Patrick Dawson (-73kg) faces Jaromir Jezek (CZE) while Owen Livesey (-81kg) will be hoping to improve on his fifth place finish at the Jeju Grand Prix last year as he fights Carlos Luz (POR) in the first round.
