Six set for Tokyo Grand Slam
This weekend six British judoka will be looking to end their year on a high at the Tokyo Grand Slam from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December.
The Tokyo Grand Slam is one of the biggest and most prestigious events on the international judo circuit and a medal there would set any one of the GB athletes up nicely for 2016.
On Friday 4 Ashley McKenzie (-60kg) and Colin Oates (-66kg) will all be stepping on the mat hoping to add another Grand Slam medal to their 2015 tally as McKenzie faces Cuba’s Yandry Torres Marimon and Oates will take on Jesus Chaparro (MEX) or Ian Sancho Chinchila (CRC).
Jeju Grand Prix gold medallist Sally Conway (-70kg) will be in action on Saturday as she faces the winner of Yoko Ono (JPN) versus Ye-Sul Hwang (KOR) and continues her push for a top eight ranking in the Olympic qualifying race. Alice Schlesinger (-63kg) will be up against Maricet Espinosa (CUB) as she looks to end a very consistent year on the international circuit with a good result.
Gemma Gibbons (-78kg) has enjoyed a strong second half to 2015 and off the back of a fourth consecutive Grand Prix medal she will be aiming to finish the year with a first Grand Slam medal since 2013. She takes on Hyunji Yoon (KOR) in her first contest on Sunday.
Sarah Adlington (+78kg) will face Tessie Savelkouls (NED) in the first round on the same day as Gibbons and the Edinburgh judoka knows a good result will put her a in a good place for 2016.
Elite Performance coach Kate Howey said: “Japan is one of the biggest and hardest tournaments of the year and one of the most prestigious so a medal here is what the players want. It is the last competition of a long year and the players are going in with good form off the back of Korea. The players have been training well here at the Kodokan and are ready to go.”
