The Commonwealth Games Federation general assembly, which was held in Auckland, New Zealand, yesterday saw plans voted through to include judo amongst six sports added to the list of core Commonwealth Games sports from 2022.

Alongside the changes to the sport programme, Louise Martin CBE was elected as the new President of the Commonwealth Games Federation. Martin is also Chair of Sportscotland and was Vice-President of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and is the first woman to hold the position of President.

Commonwealth Games are made up of a set of core sports alongside sports chosen by the host nation. Judo was included in the 2002 games in Manchester but was then absent from the games until Glasgow 2014, where Scotland topped the medal table.

Glasgow 2014 was a triumphant games for the home nations in judo, bringing home a total of 29 medals. The final medal table saw England and Scotland finish with 13 medals in total with 6 gold medals each, England ahead with four silver medals to Scotland’s two. Wales took one gold and one bronze with Northern Ireland picking up a bronze.

It was also confirmed that Durban in South Africa will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, which will be the first games under the plans.
