Learning Disability Judo sessions thriving
A class designed specifically for adults with learning difficulties to get into judo and thrive in the sport, has been an enormous success thanks to Thornton Judo Club’s Wendy Martin.
“I had been a coach in mainstream judo for a while and realising the benefits I decided to combine what I did for a living into a judo activity for adults with a learning disability”, recalls Wendy.
In 2011 Wendy set up the class which also caters for players with physical disabilities and it has gone from strength to strength.
Now in its fifth year the group also take part in regular in-house competitions.
“The group have made big improvements and over this time their achievements have been huge”, observed Wendy, “the group are taught breakfalls, rolls, throws and holds in an enjoyable atmosphere”.
The British Judo Association has help to fund these sessions to give the players the chance to grow in the sport.
“I am very grateful to Jeff Hynds [British Judo Association Area Service Manager for the North West] who, through the British Judo Association, awarded the group funding which has gone towards each member having brand new Gi’s and licences. I would also like to thank Phil Massey who also helps out with the group, I hope to promote each player in a grading soon”.
Jeff Hynds congratulated Wendy on all the work she has done with the group: “Wendy has been doing some great work with this group. Wendy, like so many others, is coaching for the love of the sport and enjoying the benefits Judo is providing to this group. It’s great that the British Judo Association are able to help and support and show recognition to Wendy for her hard work and endeavour”.
The group meet every Tuesday afternoon from 1.30PM to 2.30PM at YMCA Thornton, Victoria Road East, Thornton-Cleveleys, Lancashire FY5 3SX.
