Judo community mourns the loss of Gary Brown

British Judo is sad to announce the passing of Grimsby Judo Club’s Gary Andrew Brown at the age of 41.

Gary took up judo as an 8 year old when his father Paul, took him and his brother to the YMCA club in Lincoln. Gary thrived in the sport competing in the -95kg and then open weight categories, and went on to represent his country both as a junior and a senior.

A fast and athletic judoka, Gary was famed for his seoi-nage throw amongst his GB team mates and competitors.

British Judo Technical Officer Sam Dunkley paid tribute to his ex-teammate; “Gary was a proud and courageous man, a supreme warrior both on and off the mat.

“I remember on every squad trip that we went on together, he was always the one to be cracking everyone up with his sharp banter and keeping the atmosphere light-hearted. But when it was time to get down to business, he would step up to the plate and was always there motivating others to do so too.

“Gary was a remarkable guy and a great friend of mine, having known him for 25 years. He really was one of a kind and will be truly missed and never forgotten, by all those who had the honour and privilege of knowing him and spending time in his company.”

Following his retirement from competitive judo, Gary continued to have an impact on the sport he loved. Gary co-founded a club at the City School (now Priory City of Lincoln Academy) in his hometown, where he was coach.

Gary is survived by wife Rachel, daughter Chloe and son Jack.
