British Judo, alongside UK Sport, have instigated an independent review to take place following the withdrawal of the European Judo Championships by the European Judo Union (EJU) last month.

The independent review is set to begin in the next two weeks with the terms of reference already agreed. The review will take place over the next two months with an initial target to report back in June 2015, the same month that the European Judo Championships will now take place in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The Championships, originally to be held in Glasgow, were withdrawn from British Judo on 13th February 2015 by the European Judo Union, citing a sponsorship agreement as the reason for withdrawing the event.

Kerrith Brown, British Judo Chairman, said: “Although I remain saddened by the events over the last month, it is important for us to move forward now, and an independent review is an important step forward. We are grateful of for the support of UK Sport in this process.

“We know questions remain amongst our membership over how the events of the last month have unfolded and we hope that that this review can both answer those questions and allow us to move forward together as an association.”

The resulting report following the independent review will be made available to British Judo members in due course.
