British Judo held its English Open at iceSheffield on Sunday 8th March, with both juniors and seniors taking to the tatami battling for medal places and national ranking points. The event follows the British Schools Championships which took place on Saturday (7th March).

With today (8th March) being International Women’s Day, it was fitting that twin sisters, Rachel and Sally Moon of Wolverhampton took medals in both the junior and senior categories. Rachel came out on top, taking the gold in the junior -78kg category with Sally taking silver. Later in the day, the pair found themselves taking silver and bronze in the senior -78kg category, making it a day to remember for the girls.

England Squad Coach and GB Coach, Jamie Johnson was also presented his 6th Dan today, by British Judo Board Member, Dave Clark.

Kerrith Brown, British Judo Chairman, said: “There has been a good standard of judo on show today, and the British Schools Championships yesterday was fantastic. It was great to see so many junior referees and table officials, as an event it really helps to develop our younger players and the atmosphere was brilliant.

“It was disappointing to see entry numbers down this year at the English Open, but the quality of the judo didn’t suffer. I would like to congratulate alll the medallists this weekend, and thank the volunteers, referees and staff that have helped with the smooth running of the competitions yet again.”

Junior Results – Men

The juniors were up first in the morning, with Jack Murphy of Pro Judo taking gold in -55kg category, over Jacob Gehlan of JudoScotland who took silver, and Ashton Whalley of Beach and Henry Wakes of Shadsworth picking up bronze.

In the -60kg category Peter Miles, Bradley Stoke, picked up gold with silver going to Isaac Gagin of Impact, and bronze medals awarded to Isaac Hill, Kendal and Aaron Hales of the Karen Briggs MBE School of Judo.

Glossop and British Judo Centre of Excellence judoka, Eric Ham, took gold in the -66kg category over Wolverhampton’s Daniel Powell who took silver. Bronze medals went to Leonardo de Moura Muniz of Tower Hamlets and Adam Khalik of Hardy Spicer 83.

JudoScotland’s Colin MacDonald came out on top over George Cullum of Camberly, in the -73kg category. Daniel Pacitti of JudoScotland took bronze alongside James Hayes of Bradley Stoke.

In the junior mens -81kg category, gold was taken by Harry Lovell-Hewitt of Stroud, with Adam Adaman of Ernest Bevin Phoenix taking silver. Bronze medals went to Oscar Di Domenico of JudoScotland and Sebastian Potter of Whitburn.

Rhys Thompson of Enfield took gold in the -90kg over Jamal Petgrave of Westcroft, who claimed silver. Bronze medals went to Kern Foot, Shepton, and Ari Aristidou, SKK.

Cailin Calder of Edinburgh Club took the gold medal in the junior mens -100kg category over Alex Vasekin of Happidojo.

 

Junior Results – Women

Junior British Champion, Olivia Piechota, JSC, took gold in the -44kg category, with Molly Harvey, Tonbridge and Olivia Ried, JudoScotland taking silver and bronze respectively.

Lanina Solley of Tonbridge took gold in the junior -52kg category, with British Champion, Chelsie Giles of Coventry taking silver. Jessica Gordon-Brown, Ealing and Bryony Griffiths, Samurai, took bronze.

Jodie Caller of Renzoku took the junior -57kg title, with Lucy Day of Redbridge taking both of the silver medals. Francesca Marston of Samurai and Wolverhampton’s Jade Savory took bronze medals.

Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz of Enfield took gold in the -63kg category with Lubjana Piovesana, Bishops Challoner claiming the silver medal. Lauren Hawkins, Westcroft and Olivia Spellman of Pinewood took bronze.

The -70kg title went to Emma Ried, Redbridge, over Chloe Nunn of Bishop’s Stortford, who took silver. Shelley Ludford, Osaka and Westcroft’s Leanne Henlon took bronze.

Twins Rachel and Sally Moon of Wolverhampton, battled it out for the -78kg junior title, with Rachel coming out on top and taking the gold. Rachel Tytler, Pro Judo and Jodie Newell, Gendros claimed the bronze medals. 

In the +78 category, Michelle Boyle of Edinburgh/Dynamic Judo took gold with Chloe McPherson taking silver.

 

Senior Results – Men

The seniors took to the tatami in the afternoon, with Adam Conroy of Team Bath taking gold in -60kg category, over junior English Open champion, Peter Miles who took silver, with David Ferguson, Pro Judo picking up bronze and Isaac Hill, Kendal, picked up his second bronze of the day.

In the -66kg category Joshua Hill, Stewart Judo Academy picked up gold with silver going to Army judoka Russel Parker and bronze medals awarded to Thomas Johnson, Yoshin Ryu and James Martin of Camberly.

Aaron Turner of Camberly, took gold in the -73kg category over Yoshin Ryu’s, William Johnson who took silver. Bronze medals went to Army judoka, Alex Paske, Team Bath and Bradley Stoke’s James Hayes.

Westcroft’s Jamal Petgrave came out on top over Reece Calder, Edinburgh Club, in the -90kg category to take gold. Rhys Thompson of Enfield took bronze alongside Nicholi Daley of Erdington.

In the mens -100kg category, Mateja Glusac, Anglia Ruskin, took gold from a field of five. Conor Murphy, Team Bath, took silver with bronze awarded to Cailin Caulder, Edinburgh Club, after his earlier gold in the junior category.

Valentino Volante of JudoScotland took gold in the +100kg over Shadsworth’s Joshua Burns, who claimed silver. Bronze medals went to Matthew Bryce of JudoScotland and RAF judoka, Andrew Melbourne.

 

Senior Results – Women

Lanina Solley of Tonbridge took her second gold of the day in the -52kg category, with British Champion, Chelsie Giles of Coventry taking her second silver. Kelly Staddon of Ford took third from the field of five with Ealing’s Jessica Gordon-Brown taking fourth.

Jodie Caller of Renzoku also took her second gold of the day in the -57kg category, with Lucy Day of Redbridge taking another silver after her earlier success in the juniors. Tara Fitzjohn took bronze for Anglia Ruskin.

Eilish Walker of Judo Espirit took gold in the -63kg category with JudoScotland’s Malin Wilson claiming the silver medal. Lauren Hawkins, Westcroft and Verity Stephens of Team Red Star took bronze.

The -70kg title went to SKK’s British Judo Centre of Excellence athlete, Amy Livesey, over Emma Reid of Redbridge, who took silver. Shermane Henlon of Westcroft and Evelina Svenningsson, JK National, Sweden, took bronze.

Twins Rachel and Sally Moon of Wolverhampton, were again in the medals taking silver and bronze respectively in the -78kg category. Caroline Kinnane of Renrukan took gold, with Hazel Taylor, Shishi Kai taking bronze. 

In the +78 category, SKK and British Judo Centre of Excellence athlete Jodie Myers took gold with Alison Wilson, Jidel, taking silver and bronze medals going to Anne-Marie Davey, Goole and Army judoka Sarah Hawkes.
