Two seventh places for Great Britain in Abu Dhabi

There were two solid seventh places awarded to Great Britain today (Saturday 1 November) at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam for two of Glasgow 2014’s female -70kg Commonwealth medallists.

Megan Fletcher and Sally Conway both finished seventh respectively on the second day of the competition in the United Arab Emirates.

Conway, who is Commonwealth bronze medallist for Scotland, was the first to secure seventh place. She won her first fight against Maria Bernabeu of Spain by waza-ari but then Assma Niang of Morocco defeated her by ippon. In the repechage she lost out to Naranjargal Tsend Ayush of Mongolia by ippon.

Meanwhile, Fletcher who is Commonwealth Champion for England, dropped into the second repechage and she lost against Katazyna Klys of Poland for joint seventh place. Earlier she won her first fight against Antonia Moreira of Angola by one shido and then lost by waza-ari to Zelita Zupancic of Canada.

Owen Livesey (-81kg), who is also a Commonwealth Champion, and Jodie Mullen (-63kg) went out in their first rounds; Mullen lost by a single yuko to Emma Barkeling of Sweden and Livesey by ippon to home judoka Segiu Toma.

Tomorrow sees -78kg Commonwealth Champion for Wales Natalie Powell, +78kg Commonwealth Champion for Scotland Sarah Adlington and -90kg Commonwealth bronze medallist for England Gary Hall all fight for Great Britain at the Grand Slam.

European Cup Seniors Malaga 2014

Elsewhere, Gregg Varey (-66kg) and Julia Scardone (-52kg) both fought in Malaga, Spain at the European Cup for Seniors, this weekend. Varey went out in his first round but Scardone lost her repechage against Estrella Lopez Sheriff of Spain on shidos.
