Commonwealth Judo – Day Three – Weight-by-Weight

As we prepare to get underway at SECC on the final day of judo at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, we take a brief look at the competitors in each weight category.

Women’s -78kg

Pool A sees a bye for GB’s top-ranked athlete in the weight category, Natalie Powell of Wales, an eight-time medallist on the IJF World Tour ranked eleventh in the world.

In Pool B, is Canada’s Ana-Laura Portuondo, a Junior European Cup gold medallist and a Continental Open medallist in San Salvador. India’s Jina Chongtham is a former national champion and an athlete on the IJF World Tour.

Pool C has England’s Gemma Gibbons, Olympic Silver medallist and multiple IJF World Tour medallist who has recently returned from injury. She is joined by the Seychelles Brigitte Rose a bronze medallist at the 2012 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

In Pool D is Cameroon’s Vanessa Mballa-Atangana a double African Championship bronze medallist and Kenya’s Alice Muragu.

Women’s +78kg

Sarah Adlington of Scotland gets a bye from Pool A. She is an IJF World Tour medallist.

Pool B sees Kenya’s Esther Ratugi who took silver in the African Championship and competed in the 2013 World Championships, along with Sri Lanka’s Sachini Wewita Widanalage.

In Pool C is Annabelle Laprovidence of Mauritius an African Open silver medallist and Junior European Cup medallist Sophie Vaillancourt of Canada.

Pool D contains England’s Jodie Myers a British Judo Centre of Excellence athlete and Junior European Cup winner. Completing the line-up is India’s Rajwinder Kaur a former national champion.

Men’s -90kg

Pool A’s Ryan Dill-Russell of New Zealand is a three-time Oceanic Champion and eight-time medallist along with Geophrey Edward Mtawa of Tanzania and Jeewantha Wickramage of Sri Lanka.

Zack Piontek of South Africa is an African Open winner. 17-year-old Louis Plevin from Guernsey took silver medals in the U18 and U20 London Open earlier this year whilst Scotland’s Andrew Burns is a Continental Open winner and former U23 European bronze medallist. Experienced Cameroon athlete Dieudonne Dolassem is a nine-time African Championship medallist.

Pool C sees Mark Anthony of Australia, a four-time Oceanic Champion and Oceanic Open winner, Maltese athlete Isaac Bezzina competed in the Junior World Championships, whilst England’s Gary Hall is a European Cup winner, a European Open medallist and represented GB in the European Team Championships earlier this year in Montpellier. Levy Kiplagat Sang will represent Kenya.

Scotland’s Matt Purssey is Continental Open medallist and one of the countries most experienced competing judoka. Avtar Singh of India is a national champion and took seventh in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Stephane Ombiongno of Cameroon is an African bronze medallist and Ghana’s Victor Ahiavor who took a silver medal in November’s African Open in Port Louis.

Men’s -100kg

New Zealand’s Jason Koster has won 11 Oceanic medals including three gold. Sahil Pathania is a former World Championship competitor and Indian Champion with Ghana’s Raymond Normeshie completing the pool.

Pool B sees Euan Burton, Scotland’s flag-bearer for the games, a twice world bronze medallist, three-time European bronze medallist and winner of the Tokyo Grand Slam. Evans Ouko Kengara is a Kenyan athlete with World Championship experience, Dominic Dugasse from the Seychelles won last year’s African Open and 40-year-old Mark Montgomery of Northern Ireland took a bronze at this year’s Northern Ireland Open in Belfast.

Pool C’s Tim Slyfield of New Zealand is the reigning Oceanic silver medallist and national champion, Massoud Kombo of Tanzania took a fifth place at the 2011 African Games and Ruslan Rancev is a Lithuanian born judoka representing Wales and won this year’s Northern Ireland Open.

In Pool D Australia’s Duke Didier is a three-time Oceanic bronze medallist, Shah Hussain Shah of Pakistan has reached the quarter finals of the Asian games and competed at the Tokyo World Championships and Christopher George representing Trinidad and Tobago.

Men’s +100kg

Pool A contains Jake Andrewartha of Australia, an Oceanic Champion and four-time silver medallist and competed at the London 2012 Olympic Games, beaten by Chris Sherrington. Samoan Derek Sua won bronze at the Oceania Open in Apia and Mark Shaw of Wales is a British silver medallist.

In Pool B is 18 year old Canadian Martin Rygielski, a double national champion and Junior European Cup bronze medallist. Ruan Snyman of South Africa is a Junior African Champion.

Sam Rosserof New Zealand in Pool C is the current Oceanic Champion and winner of the Oceania Open. Parikshit Kumar represents India and Muhammad Ruzaini Abdul Razak took bronze at the South East Asian Games for Malaysia.

Pool D contains two home country athletes with Royal Marine Chris Sherrington, a London 2012 Olympian and 2014 Havana Grand Prix silver medallist representing Scotland and Gavin McNeill of Northern Ireland a regular medallist on the national scene.
